African Swine Fever entered the EU at the beginning of 2014, affecting initially wild boars in the border between Lithuania and Russia (Russia has been affected by this disease for several years). ASF spread and affected wild boars and domestic pigs in other EU countries, such as Estonia, Latvia and Poland, and also in Ukraine.
During year 2014, 254 outbreaks were confirmed in the EU: 214 in wild boars and 40 in domestic pigs. They affected a total of 425 wild boars and 19,492 domestic pigs. We must highlight that from the total number of domestic pigs, 19,411 pertained to a Lithuanian farm.
With respect to Ukraine and Russia, Ukraine notified a total of 11 outbreaks in 2014: 5 in domestic pigs and 6 in wild boars that affected a total of 17 pigs and 14 wild boars, whilst Russia notified 73 outbreaks : 30 in domestic pigs and 43 wild boars with a total of 1,705 pigs and 156 wild boars affected.
Lithuania:
From the 48 declared outbreaks, 42 of them affected wild boars, and 6 domestic pig farms. The most important one was detected on a farm located in Rupinskai village (region of Utena) with 19,411 domestic pigs affected.

Poland:
All the declared outbreaks except two affected wild boars, and all of them were located in the border area with Belarus, in the region of Podlaskie. The cases in domestic pigs appeared on two backyard farms in the aforementioned region.

Latvia:
It has been the country with more notified outbreaks: a total of 167: 135 in wild boars and 32 in domestic pigs. Most of the outbreaks were located in the border regions with Belarus and Estonia, althoug outbreaks were also detected in interior regions.

Estonia:
The first outbreak was notified September, and until the end of the year 7 oubreaks were confirmed: all of them affected wild boars (a total of 73 animals).
Ukraine:
It notified 11 oubreaks: 5 in domestic pigs and 6 in wild boars. The outbreaks were located in the regions of Lugansk, Chernigov and Sumy (border areas with Russia and Belarus).
