On September 6, the first case of African swine fever was confirmed in Sweden. ASF was detected in a sample from a dead wild boar found southeast of Fagersta in Västmanland county.
Since August 25, seven dead wild boar have been found in a limited area in the Fagerstat district. Samples from another wild boar are on their way to the veterinary authorities.
Although it is still unknown how the infection arrived, considering that the affected area is far from the nearest infected area in Europe, the country's veterinary authorities believe that it was spread by humans and not by wild boar.
One of the first steps will be for the authorities to collaborate with hunting organizations to determine the extent of the affected area. This is done by searching for dead wild boars in combination with knowledge of where they are distributed.
Within the affected area, all access will initially be prohibited. This means, for example, that it is not permitted to stay there, pick berries and mushrooms, hunt, work in forestry, or engage in other outdoor activities.
