Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently approved legislation regarding the labelling of analogue and cell-cultured products. The legislation specifies that the term "meat" does not include an analogue product or a cell-cultured product and that these products must be clearly labelled as such.
Analogue products are derived by combining processed plant products, insects, or fungus with food additives to approximate the texture, flavor, appearance, or other qualities of any specific type of egg, fish, meat, or, poultry product. The new legislation mandates that analogue products must clearly bear one of the following terms on the label: analogue, meatless, plant based, made from plants, or a similar qualifying term or disclaimer intended to clearly communicate to a consumer the contents of the product.
A cell-cultured product (food product derived by harvesting animal cells and artificially replicating those cells in a growth medium in a laboratory to produce tissue) must be prominently labelled using one of the following: cell-cultured, lab-grown, or a similar qualifying term or disclaimer intended to clearly communicate to a consumer the contents of the product.
