In light of soaring pork prices, a reduced pig inventory, and increasing production costs, the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives imposed a ban on exporting live pigs for 3 months from January 6, 2022 to April 5, 2022 to increase the amount of pork in the country. The Ministry of Commerce will assess the situation to determine whether the ban should be renewed or not.

According to preliminary figures for 2021, about 18 million pigs were supplied domestically, and about 1 million were exported abroad.

Other measures include promoting maize production to rely less on foreign imports, expanding sow production capacity, and improving farm standards to prevent disease outbreaks.
