On June 5, Thailand reported an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) to the World Organisation for Animal Health. The outbreak occurred on a farm with 70 pigs in Chiang Mai. This is the first outbreak reported to the organization since September 2023.
The source of the infection is suspected to be swill feeding and fomites. Food scraps fed to pigs might not have been heated thoroughly due to the large container size, leaving some virus particles undestroyed despite boiling. Additionally, the farm's proximity to a waste collection area and the presence of stray dogs, coupled with a weak and inadequate fence, may allow stray dogs to introduce the virus into the farm.
