After the confirmation of animal cruelty cases at the Tielt abattoir (Belgium), the Flemish Minister of Animal Welfare, Mr. Ben Weyts, ordered its temporary closure.

After Minister Weyts's decision, the Degra group (the company that owns the abattoir), filed an extremely urgent appeal before the Council of State asking for the revocation of this decision.

Last Friday, during the meeting of the Council of State, this body decided that it is not possible, for the moment, to reopen the abattoir, and that its activity could resume if the company submits an acceptable plan of action approved by the Animal Welfare Service that prevents more violations of this kind in the future.

The Council of State's final decision is expected for next April 20th.
