The eradication of FMD is a priority for the countries comprising the Southern Agricultural Council (CAS). The statement was signed by ministers Julian Dominguez (Argentina), Nemesia Achacollo (Bolivia), Mendes Ribeiro Filho (Brazil), José Antonio Galilee (Chile), the Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Uruguay, Daniel Garin and the Director of Planning and Rural Development of the Ministry of Agriculture (Paraguay), Panfilo Alberto Ortiz.
For CAS, the FMD status of the Republic of Paraguay concerns the entire region and threatens the achievement of the objectives outlined in the Hemispheric Plan for Eradication of Foot and Mouth Disease (PHEFA) and the MERCOSUR Foot and Mouth Disease Free Action Program (PAMA).
Council members reiterated the technical and financial resources necessary for Paraguay to recover its FMD free status as soon as possible with vaccinations. During the meeting the representative of the Ministry of Paraguay presented a report on the status of FMD in that country.
The Brazilian Minister of Agriculture, Mendes Ribeiro Filho, current president of CAS, proposed on behalf of other representatives that the Paraguayan authorities receive the Standing Committee on Veterinary Professionals in order to develop activities related to improving the status.
