The German pig census drops

It is the lowest pig census since November 2010.

On reference day 3 May 2017, 27.1 million pigs were kept in Germany, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). According to the provisional results of the biannual survey, the pig population decreased roughly by 276,000 heads (or 1%), from November 2016. This has been the lowest population recorded since November 2010.

We must also highlight the decrease in the number of pig farms. In comparison with the previous census, the number of farms has dropped by 2.7% (-700). The structural change on the sow farms is especially noticeable, with a decrease by 4.3% (- 400).
