According to what the IFIP has published, in 2014, in the EU, some 250 million pigs were slaughtered. A total of 20 companies slaughter more than 2 million pigs per year, and they represent 45% of the European production. These companies pertain to countries in the EU (Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands, France and Spain), although since 2013, also to China, after the acquisition of Smithfield (owner of the abattoirs in Romania and Poland) by WH Gropu (previously Shuanghui), the first pork producer in the world, with its headquarters in Hong Kong.
The ten biggest abattoirs in the EU, this is, with a slaughter capacity that exceeds 3 million pigs per year, slaughter more than 44 million pigs/year, equivalent to 17% of the European total. Three of these abattoirs pertain to the German company Tönnies, among them the biggest one in Europe. On the other hand, the abattoir of the Italian company Pini located in Poland has a slaughtering capacity of 1,000 pigs/hour (one of the highest in Europe). In Spain, three abattoirs have a capacity of some 3 million pigs slaughtered per year.
