The Integrated Agricultural Development Agency of Santa Catarina (Cidasc) received two trade missions from South Korea to learn about and evaluate the production, slaughter, and health control processes for cattle, poultry, and pigs. The aim was to carry out an audit of Santa Catarina's pork, beef, and poultry production. South Korea only allows pork and beef from areas free of foot and mouth disease without vaccination - a status Santa Catarina has held for 16 years.
Between November 9 and 14, the South Korean delegation visited farms and meatpacking plants in the three southern states, according to the agenda organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA). On the last day, they visited the Federal Agricultural Defense Laboratory in Rio Grande do Sul. The two neighboring states recently achieved certification as an area free of foot and mouth disease without vaccination, granted by the World Organization for Animal Health (WHOA) to the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Acre, Rondônia, and parts of Amazonas and Mato Grosso, but the condition has yet to be recognized by the South Korean authorities.
