Geographical indications legally protect more than 3,300 product names that owe their characteristics or reputation to their region of production, thanks to their natural environment and the skills of local producers.
Geographical indications promote the unique characteristics of these special products and the traditional knowledge of their producers. Each geographical indication has precise specifications on how the product is manufactured, while serving to guarantee the quality of the products. These protected products include such names as Champagne, Feta, Prosciutto di Parma, Ouzo and Rioja.
