Increased production of meat, which is observed in the current year, has caused a reduction in imports of pork and poultry by 50 percent, which led to a rapid increase in exports of these products.

Thus, according to UCAB in the first quarter of 2011 Ukraine exported 16,800 MT of all kinds of meat vs. 11,800 MT during the same period last year. Taking into account the development of trade, we can speak about a significant decrease in negative trade balance of meat products in 2011, although the conditions for agricultural production remain very difficult, because despite the increase in feed prices, meat prices remain relatively low.

According to UCAB data “the top ten largest livestock holdings in Ukraine include poultry and pork enterprises. The profitability from breeding pigs in holdings made up 23 percent, whereas in typical farms it was 12 percent. Regarding the production of poultry meat for slaughter, the holdings’ performance is higher by 2.5 times and production cost is lower by 32 percent than in other companies.
