According to the Pig Producers' Association of Ukraine, and based on data from the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, in 2016, African Swine Fever (ASF) caused losses amounting USD4.81 million, of which 1.51 million affected the industry and 3.3 million the budget.
In the last 4 years, the number of ASF outbreaks has increased exponentially. According to the estimates of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), each pig slaughtered due to ASF causes a loss of USD115 on backyard farm and of USD200 on small and medium-sized farms, reaching USD460 on large commercial farms.
