The Scottish breeding herd is down 12 percent. Over the twelve months to June 2012 total pig numbers have fallen by 26,600 (6.8 percent) to 363,400. The drop in numbers may be attributable to producers downsizing in advance of herds being restocked.

The latest figures show a decrease in the breeding herd of 4,500 (12.3 percent) to 31,900, and a decrease in other pigs (mostly for meat production) of 22,200 (6.4 percent) to 324,000.
