A vital part of protecting the nation's food supply is the availability of adequate resources at the border to conduct inspections of incoming food and agricultural goods. The U.S. House of Representatives approved legislation that authorizes funding to prevent African swine fever (ASF) and other foreign animal diseases (FAD) from entering the United States.
The bill states that every year 240 new Agriculture Specialists may be hired, trained, and assigned to conduct inspections at land, air and sea ports. In addition, 200 new Agriculture Technicians may be hired yearly along with 20 new canine inspection teams.
In October 2019, the Senate approved an identical version of the bill (S. 2107), which the House approved February 10, 2020.
