The issue of a lack of livestock veterinarians in the United States is complex and multi-faceted. There are many challenges in recruitment and retention of vets. One important issue is the income-to-debt ratio that veterinarians face.

Social issues relating to rural areas play a significant role. Important factors that livestock vets consider when looking for work are career opportunities for their spouse in the same area and childcare availability. Caseload and mentorship are other factors.
