The Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) announced the availability of the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System—Enteric Bacteria (NARMS) 2009 Executive Report.

The report summarizes, in an integrated format, NARMS data on non-typhoidal Salmonella and Campylobacter isolates recovered in 2009 from food animals at federally inspected plants, retail meats, and humans. The report also includes susceptibility data on Escherichia coli isolates recovered from retail meats and chickens. Summary data from prior years are also included.

The NARMS 2009 Executive Report is very similar to the 2008 report. The main changes are:
• Ceftriaxone replaces Ceftiofur in the multidrug resistance (MDR) patterns.
• Antimicrobial resistance data are highlighted for only five Salmonella serotypes (as was done in the NARMS 2006 and 2007 Executive Reports).
• Due to space constraints, data from years 1996-1997 are not included in the antimicrobial resistance tables. Data from these years are still displayed in the graphs and supporting tables. Readers can refer to the NARMS 2007 Executive Report for data from those years.
