The "Technical Guidelines for Monitoring African Swine Fever Variant Strains in Pig Farms" were published by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture to guide pig farmers in monitoring and detecting the ASF virus, especially the mutant strains, and to improve its prevention and control.
Variant strains of African swine fever include gene-deleted strains, natural variant strains, and naturally attenuated strains. Compared with the African swine fever strain introduced in 2018, the genome sequence and pathogenicity of this type of strains have undergone significant changes. After live pigs are infected with this type of virus, the incubation period is prolonged, and the clinical manifestations are mild. In the later stage, joint swelling and skin hemorrhagic necrosis may appear.
The government document encourages the strengthening of clinical inspections, paying attention to symptoms, and testing as soon as possible.
