On August 24 Royal Decree 695/2022 came into effect which establishes measures for the control of animal welfare in slaughterhouses through the installation of video surveillance systems. Small slaughterhouses will have an additional year to implement these measures.
Slaughterhouses must have a video surveillance system that will allow animal welfare controls to be carried out in addition to those already carried out in these establishments. This will allow better control of compliance with the requirements of current legislation on animal welfare at the time of slaughter and related operations.
The installation of video surveillance systems for the control of animal welfare will serve as a tool for both slaughterhouse operators and the authorities supervising compliance with animal welfare regulations. However, the use of video surveillance systems does not relinquish the rest of the controls that the slaughterhouse operator has to carry out in terms of animal welfare in accordance with the regulations in force.
With this measure, Spain is a pioneer in the EU in the mandatory installation of video surveillance systems for the control of animal welfare in all slaughterhouses in the country.
