Due to the African swine fever epidemic, Vietnam had to cull nearly 6 million pigs. After the epidemic reached its peak (May - July 2019), the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) drastically implemented pig herd restocking and breeding efforts.
From the beginning of 2020 to date, MARD has supported enterprises in importing more than 5,000 grandparent pigs. It is expected that in 2020, Vietnam will import a total of 10,000 grandparent pigs to restock the domestic pig herd. MARD has also supported businesses in importing about 6,000 piglets.
To date, the country's total pigs have reached nearly 25 million, equivalent to nearly 81% of the total pigs before the African swine outbreak. The output of pork from the beginning of 2020 will also reach more than 1.7 million tons, equal to 92% over the same period.
MARD has also cooperated with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to import over 70,000 tons of pork, an increase of more than 300% over the same period in 2019. In addition, MARD has allowed the import of live pigs from Thailand for the first time.
