Vietnam: Even with ASF cases up, pig industry expects growth

This year ASF cases have already surpassed the total for 2020. Even so, the pig industry is expected to see growth.

The country's total pig herd is estimated to increase to 26.67 million heads, up 4.5% compared to the same period in 2020.

However, there has been twice the number of African swine fever cases compared to the same period in 2020, with more than 93,260 infected animals having been culled so far this year. ASF caused the loss of about 6 million pigs in 2019, and about 90,000 in 2020 according to the General Statistics Office of Viet Nam.

The livestock industry has proposed targets to reach by the end of 2021. Meat production of all kinds is to reach 5.8 million tons, of which: pork is to reach 3.7 million tons (up 6.1%).
