Vietnam produced 2.62 million tonnes of meat in the first half of this year, up 2.3% on year, said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).
The volume of meat comprised 1.94 million tonnes of pork (live weight), 439,000 tonnes of poultry and 230,000 tonnes of beef and buffalo meat, the ministry said.
Despite difficulties in the domestic livestock sector, the number of pigs rose 1.08% to 26.9 million while that of poultry increased 1.17% to 314 million during the period, reported MARD. In the past few years, Vietnamese farmers have been incurring huge losses as meat prices have dropped sharply while production costs have continuously risen.
