According to the Spanish Health Alert Network (RASVE), yesterday, April 7, the Official Veterinary Services (OVS) in Poland reported a second outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in domestic pigs.
The affected farm is located in the Wieckowice municipality, Poznań County, a previously disease-free and therefore unrestricted area in the west of the country, near the border with Germany.
This is the second outbreak the country has reported in domestic pigs in 2020 and follows outbreak 2020/1, which was reported on March 23, in the Niedoradz municipality (Nowa Sól County), within the restricted area. Both farms belong to the same company.
According to the Polish authorities, after detecting at-risk movement from the first outbreak, the same day March 20, blood samples were taken from 62 animals on this Wieckowice farm, all of which tested negative for the viral genome by RT-PCR. However, increased surveillance continued, and samples from animals that had died were tested over the following days (no abnormal mortality was detected at the farm), with negative results for all samples. However, on April 1, five dead piglets were sampled and tested positive by RT-PCR, first at the regional laboratory in Poznan, and then at the Polish National Reference Laboratory.
The western part of Poland, south of where this last outbreak was detected in domestic pigs, has been affected by ASF outbreaks in wild boar since November 2019. To date, a total of 603 cases in wild boar have been reported in this area.
It is also worth noting the proximity of this outbreak to the German border, with a consequent risk of the disease entering German territory.
