The year 2023 ended with the cost of production per kilogram of live pig reaching R$6.20 according to Embrapa Swine and Poultry's Intelligence Center (CIAS). Despite the ICPSuíno production cost index having increased since October (reaching 354.90), production costs fell in the 12 months of last year. Pig costs fell by 23.16% in 2023.
In December, the increase in the ICPSuíno index was influenced by the cost of animal feed, which rose by 1.61% and accounted for 74.83% of the total cost. As a result, the total cost of production per kilogram of live pigs produced in a farrow-to-finish system in Santa Catarina in December reached R$6.20, an increase of R$0.08/kg compared to November.
The state of Santa Catarina is used as a reference in the CIAS calculations because it is the country's leading pig producer, and production costs are a reference for the production sector. However, independent pig farmers and poultry farmers under integration contracts must monitor the evolution of their own production costs.
