The continuous increase in wild boar populations is a challenge for the sustainable management of the species due to the negative impact that its overpopulation has on the population dynamics of other wild species, animal health, agricultural production, road safety, and public safety.
The monitoring of this species is essential for the authorities of the autonomous communities to take the necessary measures for its management, capture, and control of associated risks according to the particular situation of each region, as well as to coordinate strategic decisions.
To this end, it is necessary to carry out a study on a national scale, taking into account the wide distribution of the species and its plasticity in the use of different habitats and agricultural, livestock, and even urban environments, to provide the necessary calibration of the results of existing and validated models on the distribution of the relative abundance of wild boar in Spain, in order to obtain a projection of density values for the entire national territory.
MAPA has commissioned the CSIC, through the IREC, to carry out a study to quantify the size of wild boar (Sus scrofa) populations in Spain, as well as their distribution with a spatial resolution at least at the county level, with the aim of using this data for the management of this species.
The cost of execution of this work entrusted to CSIC through IREC, which will begin after the entry into force of this Agreement, amounts to a maximum of 379,911.10 euros, distributed between 2023 and 2026.
