This image corresponds to four 16 weeks old pigs with intestinal torsion as the cause of their death. The loops of gut are distended with gas, have a deep purple colour and filled with heavily blood-stained liquid. The wall of the gut is thin. There is usually an accumulation of bloody fluid free in the abdomen.
Mortality caused by intestinal torsion was above 1%. The addition of extra fibre in the diet and reducing the energy helped to reduce mortality caused by intestinal torsion in this unit.
