Interstitial pneumonia - Atlas of swine pathology

Where: respiratory system, lungs
Possible causes: Porcine circovirosisPRRSInfluenza
This image corresponds to an interstitial pneumonia in a 8 weeks old weaner pig. This lesion is highly suggestive of viral pneumonia.
In this case, the unit was experiencing and increase of pigs with progressive loss of body condition and laboured abdominal breathing. Response to antimicrobial treatment proved unsuccessful. Mortality increased from 1.5% to 6%. The unit is negative to PRRS (Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome) and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (Enzootic pneumonia). The unit was not vaccinating to PCV-2.
Lungs and blood samples were submitted to the laboratory and confirmed the presence of PCV-2 by RT-PCR with CT values ranging from 23 to 28.
Vaccination with a commercial PCV-2 vaccine was introduced in the herd. This treatment proved to be successful immediately after introduction.
