The image corresponds to cranioventral lung consolidation of a finishing pig (around 20 weeks of age). The affected areas of the lung are clearly demarcated, collapsed, and purplish red on gross inspection.
There was a sudden onset of a marked respiratory illness affecting most pigs in the herd with prostration, fever and lack of appetite.
Morbidity was high and mortality was low.
Swine influenza subtype H1N1 was confirmed in these lungs by RT-PCR with CT of 21.8.
