The sharp needle teeth of piglets can damage the teats and udder and allow infection to penetrate. This could lead to acute mastitis. The sow shows signs of illness- she is depressed, reluctant to rise or suckle, inappetant, and will have a raised temperature. To reduce the incidence of such lesions, piglets’ sharp teeth are often clipped or filed in commercial pig production.
