Stomach ulcer in a 6-week old piglet. Stomach ulcers are lesions commonly seen in pigs. Although they are most often seen in adult sows and finishing pigs, these lesions can actually appear at any age.
There are many risk factors associated with the development of ulcers, many of them related to a lack of feed intake, stress, presence of respiratory disease, empty feeders, lack of water, or very high temperatures. Another predisposing factor is feed particle size (particles < 700 microns). Although less frequent, we cannot forget the bacterial etiology, such as H. pylori and E. coli.
