The Haematopinus suis louse is found worldwide. Its significance is variable as it can cause anemia and is the main route of swinepox transmission.

  • Anemia.
  • Skin irritation.
  • Red skin lesions.
  • Hairy pigs.

 

Causes / Contributing Factors

Outdoor pig farming.


 

Diagnosis

Clinical examination: lice are large and easily visualized especially on the neck, flank, and inner parts of the legs.


 

Control/Prevention

  • Lice are susceptible to many insecticides.
  • The use of insecticides requires a second application after 10-20 days to break the lice's life cycle.
