Non-viable or viable (piglets)
In the case of piglets, viability makes reference to their survival probability. A viable piglet is one that is born with a good weight (more than 1 kg) and without excessive complications during farrowing. On the contrary, a non-viable piglet is one that is born with so important deficiencies that make the piglet almost incapable of surviving. Amongst these deficiencies we find an excessively low weight at birth (for instance lower than 700 g) and the presence of congenital defects or irreparable malformations that will condition its survival.
