Netherlands - Antibiotics in livestock farming: turning the corner?

FIDIN, the association for the suppliers of animal drugs, recently announced that antibiotics use fell by 12 percent in 2010, following a fall of two percent in the previous year. That is good news. The government wants use of antibiotics this year to be 20 percent less than in 2009, and to have halved in 2013.

USA - FDA announces availability of the NARMS strategic plan

The FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine announced today the availability of its National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) Strategic Plan, a dynamic roadmap which outlines the program’s commitment to sustained food safety through monitoring and research.

United Kingdom –VMD Regulations 2010 Consultation: results about introduction of controls on internet retailing of veterinary medicinal products with an associated fee

In light of the comments received Ministers have decided to proceed with the proposal for a compulsory registration scheme in the 2011 Regulations. The scheme will come into force one year from the date of the VMR coming into force. It will not cover sales of AVM-GSL medicines. Further information relating to the scheme will be made available on the VMD website as it becomes available.

Germany – Report on antibiotic resistances in the food chain

The National Reference Laboratories for Salmonella and Antibiotic Resistance at the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) tested Salmonella isolates from diagnostic submissions for antibiotics resistance and assessed them according to epidemiological criteria between 2000 and 2008. The isolates originated mainly from animals and foods but also from feeds and the environment.
