Germany - Pork industry report

Pork is by far Germany's most significant meat product. Production in 2009 of 5.25mn tonnes was more than double the combined total production of poultry, beef and lamb that year. Pork production saw rapid growth in the second half of the last decade expanding 22.0% from 2004 to 2009. As production has risen, there has been rapid changes in the structure of the sector.

The number of small breeders follows the trend in the number of small farms, i.e. a general decrease, which is especially marked where there are proportionally more small farms. The number of pigs is falling at a similar rate, as there is a strong link between these two numbers. The number of large fatteners is increasing apart from in a few countries. There, although the number of large farms is stable, their average size is continuing to increase. On average, between the 2003 and 2007 surveys, the number of pigs for the large fatteners doubled, with more extreme figures being seen at national level. At EU level, the increase was 16.4%.

Vietnam to phase out backyard pig farms

Vietnam targets to reduce the number of small-scale, backyard pig farms to 60% by 2010 from 75% currently and increase the percentage of improved pig breeds from 9.6% currently to 19.2% in 2010 and 26.6% in 2015.
