Fiji - New piggery boosts industry

A commercial pig farm was opened at Veiwawa in Navua by the Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Primary Industries, Joketani Cokanasiga. In his opening speech, Mr. Cokanasiga said that pig production in rural areas is wide spread and offer great opportunity as an income generation activity, enhance food security and contribute towards poverty alleviation.

The tendency towards a higher concentration of slaughterhouses in Germany has continued throughout 2010. The 10 largest German slaughterhouses had, in 2010, a 75,1% market share which represents an increase of 16,1% over the last 7 years. The 4 largest slaughterhouses have 60,1% of the market compared to the 48,4% they had 7 years ago.

While they tick all the welfare boxes, free-range sows are no respecters of the land. Pig farmers are purchasing record quantities of Paneltim, the plastic building panel, reports Suffolk-based equipment company, G E Baker Ltd. The company, which also trades under the Quality Equipment name, has been distributing the product in the UK for 14 years.
