Canada’s Economic Action Plan is delivering real results for hog farmers and meat processors in Saskatchewan. Member of Parliament Ray Boughen (Palliser) announced an investment of more than $1.7 million to Donald’s Fine Foods for the refurbishing of its facility in Moose Jaw.

The Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) stated that by 2015, the proportion of large-scale production of major animals would be raised by 10-15 percentage points and the number of standardized farms would account for 50% of the total of large-scale farms; productivity of those standardized large-scale farms would be improved; the animal waste would be treated to reach the standards for discharge or utilized as a resource; and the quality and safety of animal products would be substantially upgraded.

Pig producers and abattoirs are saving time and money with the new BPEX electronic pig movement project, known in short as eAML2. The system is currently being trialled in all assured abattoirs and will go live across the industry in April 2011 for England and Wales. It has combined the Animal Movement Licence (AML2) and Food Chain Information (FCI) forms – required when pigs are moved from farm to slaughter – and made the whole process electronic.
