OIE’s official disease status can be issued for six priority diseases. These status are of major importance to OIE Members and are of great significance for international trade as they constitute an official reference for the World Trade Organization (WTO). They reflect the level of transparency and quality of the Veterinary Services of the country, increase the value of its livestock sector and facilitate regional and international trade of animals and animal products.

The Colombian Agriculture and Livestock Institute (ICA) has signed a cooperation agreement in technical assistance matters with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE/WOAH), with the aim that Colombia receives a greater international support in the next three years that helps to strengthen and improve animal health and the development of the livestock sector in Colombia.

The status was recovered on May 20, 2019.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Andrés Valencia Pinzón, said, in a press conference, that “In august we will recover the foot-and-mouth disease-free country status”.

This kind of tests allow to assess the appropriate organisation of the Veterinary Services when faced with real alert situations, the suitability of the Contingency Plans and to improve the coordination between the different administrations involved.

As globalization increases the interconnectedness between nations, economies, and industries, the introduction of diseases will continue to remain a prominent threat to the livestock sector and the trade of animals and animal products, as well as the livelihoods of farmers, food security and public health.

Morocco hadn't notified foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks since November 13th, 2015, when it notified the last O ME-SA / Indian 2001 serotype outbreaks.

After the new foot-and-mouth disease cases in Colombia, the Venezuelan Government has forbidden the entry of Colombian animals and their products.
