USA - Study finds MRSA in Midwestern swine, workers

The first study documenting methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in swine and swine workers in the United States has been published by University of Iowa researchers. For the study, investigators analyzed nasal swabs of 299 swine and 20 swine workers from two different production systems in Iowa and Illinois. At Production System A, the overall prevalence of MRSA was 70 percent in swine and 64 percent in workers. At Production System B, all swine and human samples were negative for MRSA.

Philippines - One worker in RP infected with Ebola-Reston

The Department of Health confirmed that one farm worker in the Philippines has been infected with Ebola-Reston antibodies, officials announced Friday. The US Center for Disease Control (CDC) said this is likely an old infection contracted more than six months ago. The person is healthy and has had no serious illness in the past 12 months, said Dr. Enrique Tayag, director of the Department of Health's National Epidemiology Center.

Brazil – Classical swine fever: OIE final report

The outbreak concerned an extensive cattle farm with pigs for self- consumption (23 animals). The animals were destroyed on 27 September 2008. After the sanitation process, sentinels were introduced; they did not show clinical signs and were negative in the serological tests. On 26 December 2008, sentinels were slaughtered and no anatomopathological signs were detected. Quarantine measures were lifted. To date, no further outbreaks of classical swine fever have been detected in the State of Maranhao.

USA - South Dakota reports case of swine flu

South Dakota has reported a case of swine flu in a human, a 19-year-old South Dakota State University student. The state Public Health Laboratory identified the A/H1 portion of the virus and just this week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) influenza lab identified the swine components of the virus.

USA - Investigation of outbreak of infections caused by Salmonella Typhimurium 2008-2009

CDC is collaborating with public health officials in many states, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) - Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate an ongoing multistate outbreak of human infections due to Salmonella serotype Typhimurium. As of Wednesday, January 7, 2009, 388 persons infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella Typhimurium have been reported from 42 states.

Ireland - Inquiry into pork dioxin crisis to open

The Oireachtas agriculture committee inquiry into the handling of the pork dioxin crisis is to open this morning at Leinster House. Today's meeting is the first of a series of hearings which the committee will be holding in the coming weeks in order to investigate the issues surrounding the contamination of Irish pork products and consider how the difficulties now facing this industry might be overcome.
