Survey of Salmonella populations from swine waste-treatment technologies

02-May-2011
The objectives of this field survey were to evaluate the effects of several promising swine waste-management and treatment technologies on reducing Salmonella presence and populations and to characterize the diversity of Salmonella isolates recovered from the waste streams using serotyping and antibiotic-susceptibility analysis.

Detection of Porcine Endogenous Retrovirus (PERV) viremia in diseased versus healthy US pigs by qualitative and quantitative real-time RT-PCR

20-Apr-2011
Previous studies have linked levels of porcine endogenous retroviruses (PERV) with poor health and disease in pigs. To determine the levels of expression of PERVs and their potential association with disease expression, real-time reverse transcriptase (RT) PCR assays were used to assess PERV-ABC, PERV-C and PERV-A/C levels in three commercial swine operations in the United States.

Effects of transport conditions and vehicle design on the welfare and meat quality of pigs in western and eastern Canada

15-Apr-2011
The objective of this study was to examine the influence of transport conditions on the behaviour, physiology and welfare of pigs in eastern and western Canada, in both summer and winter. Our goals were to evaluate differences between truck types, truck compartments and seasons in each region, and to use this information to identify problem areas and potential solutions.

Elimination of Porcine Respiratory Coronavirus

08-Apr-2011
A research protocol was designed to eradicate the virus in pigs sourced from a PRCV positive sow herd. The sow herd is a 150 farrow to finish herd, under one roof, and is PRRS and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae negative. Forty piglets were weaned from nursing gilts/sows at 5 days of age and removed to a separate nursery which had been thoroughly disinfected and cleaned.
