Pig stocks were recorded by means of sampling at around 4 000 holdings – for the first time directly, so without assistance of towns and municipalities (as the survey bodies) – on the reference date of 1 June 2009 and yielded a total figure of 3 151 000 animals. This corresponds to a 2.9% rise in stocks compared to the date of the last census in December 2008.

Nearly two-thirds of China’s consumers stopped eating pork in the early stages of the H1N1 influenza outbreak this year, and more than one in five consumers in the world’s largest pork market still believe that eating pork can result in catching the flu virus, according to a survey of 1,200 Chinese consumers commissioned last month by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF).

Net farm income is forecast to be $54.0 billion in 2009, down $33.2 billion (38 percent) from the preliminary estimate of $87.2 billion for 2008. The 2009 forecast is $9 billion below the average of $63.2 billion in net farm income earned in the previous 10 years.

Mexico - Singapure allows entry of Mexican pig meat and products
