The report made by Wageningen UR gives an overview of the current husbandry and management practices in the poultry and pig sector in Argentina related to animal welfare. The research centered on a description of the broiler, layer and pig sector in Argentina, the regulatory framework in force in Argentina with respect to animal welfare and a survey on husbandry practice in the poultry and pig sector.

Denmarks Statistics has reported an increase of 5,6% in Danish pig stock compared to 2009. The number of breeding animals has increased by 6.6 %.

The European breeding herd continues to contract in response to poor returns — although Holland and Denmark have seen an increase, as weaner producers send more animals to Germany.

The total number of pigs in December 2009 saw an increase of 1.3% from the previous year to 3.8 million. The breeding herd increased by 3.3% from 354 thousand in December 2008 to 365 thousand in December 2009.

In 2008 the Polish swine population reached its lowest levels in 40 years. The latest census carried out last year shows that although the population has grown, the total increase has only been by 0.1% compared to the previous year. However, the number of breeding sows has increased by 6%.

In 2008 pigmeat production in the EU-27reached 259.6 million head (Table 2), of which more than half (54.4%) came from four countries (DE, DK, ES and FR). The EU foreign balance showed a surplus of 1.8 million tonnes (pigmeat and processed pigmeat), i.e. 7% of the slaughtering, but extra-EU trade represented only 14% of the national foreign trade (in volume terms).

Previous 2009 data, as compared to the final 2008 data, changed in the following way: In comparison to the previous year, the number of cattle decreased by 2%, the number of sheep by 4% and the number of goats by 10%, while the total number of pigs increased by 13% and of poultry by 7%.
