UK pig producer price in contrast to the EU average price

The UK producer price in the first three months of 2011 decreased which was in contrast to the EU average price which increased considerably following the dioxin crisis in January. Higher throughputs at abattoirs may have restricted price movements in the UK and the higher EU price resulted in an erosion of the premium the UK obtained over the EU average.

European Union - EFSA publishes first practical guidance for assessing nano applications in food & feed

The European Food Safety Authority has published a guidance document for the risk assessment of engineered nanomaterial (ENM) applications in food and feed. The guidance is the work of the Authority’s Scientific Committee and is the first of its kind to give practical guidance for addressing potential risks arising from applications of nanoscience and nanotechnologies in the food and feed chain.

Chile - Ready to export pork to China

United Kingdom - Reduction in Total Income from Farming 2010

In real terms, after adjusting for inflation, Total Income from Farming per Annual Work Unit (AWU) of entrepreneurial labour is estimated to have decreased by 3.4% to £23,953 in 2010. This decline results from a reduction in Total Income from Farming (-4.3%) in real terms to £4.38 billion and a fall in the number of annual work units of entrepreneurial labour (-1.0%).

France- Increase in pork importations and exportations

Throughout 2010 France has been confirmed as the third largest pork exporter in the EU, after Germany and Denmark. With a total volume of 730.000 tons, the French exportations have increased by 1,7%. Other EU countries continue to be the main destination with a volume of 561.000 tons (- 2,7%) while exportation to third party countries, although fewer (170.000 tons), showed an important rise (+20%).

Denmark – Decrease in swine census

According to the latest data on the swine census published by the Danish Agriculture and Food Council, during the first trimester of this year there has been a 2.3% decrease in the number of animals compared to last year. As on April 1st, 2011, the census was at 11,932.000 animals while at the same time last year the census was at 12,208,000 animals.

Global and EU agricultural exports rebound

World agricultural trade reached an all-time high in 2010 - at least 12% above the previous record set in 2008 - according to a new MAP (Monitoring Agri-trade Policy) report published by the Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture & Rural Development.
