United Kingdom - Research needed on meat safety

The Food Standards Agency is commissioning four pieces of research that will help gather evidence to modernise official controls on meat. The work forms part of the Future Meat Controls Research Programme. The driving force behind this programme is to improve public health by adopting a more risk- and evidence-based approach to meat production.

Uruguay - Pork consumption increases

Throughout 2010 the consumption of pork in Uruguay increased by 4,6%, fixing itself at 9 kg per inhabitant, although this is still below the record reached in 2007 (9,6 kg).

Austria - Number of pigs stable

For the reference date 1 December 2010, Statistics Austria reports a total number of 3.134.000 pigs (-0,1% compared to 2009). A marginal increase was observed within the number of piglets and young pigs (+0.3% to 1 604 000 animals). The number of pigs for fattening purposes increased during the same period by 0.1% to 1 245 000 head while the number of pigs for breeding decreased by 3.1% to 285 000 animals.

EU pig meat exports increase

Throughout 2010 the exportation of pig meat from the EU reached 685.319 tons, which represents a 12.5% increase when compared with 2009 exports. A 182% increase of exports to Belarus stands out, as well as a 20% increase in exports to Japan. The main destinations of European pig meat are Russia with 30.1% of the total exported (809.148 tons), Hong Kong with 15,7% of the total, and Japan and china with 8,3% and 7,9% of the total.
