European Union – 2009 pigmeat production

In the last year in the EU-27, a total of 22.6 million tons of pigmeat was produced. Germany takes first place with 24% of the total, followed by Spain (14%), France (9%), Poland (7%), Denmark (7%), Italy (7%) y Holland (6%).

Stricter limits will apply for air pollution for example, although Member States will have some flexibility to extend deadlines for power plants or waive the rules for other installations in special cases.

Slovenia, Poland and Spain get Aujesky's upgrade

EU veterinary experts have decided to upgrade the health status of several member states. the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCOFCAH) agreed to declare Slovenia an Aujesky-free member state, while Poland and Spain were also upgraded to a regime of "special trade rules" aimed at consolidating progress made to date.

European Union - New EU labelling rules including new EU organic logo come into force on 1 July

New EU rules on organic food labelling including the requirement to display the new EU organic logo, enter into force on 1 July, 2010. The so-called “Euro-Leaf” will now be obligatory on pre-packaged organic food products that have been produced in any of EU Member States and meet the necessary standards. Other private, regional or national logos will continue to appear alongside the EU label. The logo stays optional for non-packed and imported organic products.
