Netherlands -Twenty percent fewer livestock will curb manure oversupply

The oversupply of manure from Dutch livestock farms is rising as a result of stricter environmental regulations. To solve this problem without manure export or technological innovations, the number of livestock will have to be reduced by twenty percent before 2020, reports the Agricultural Economics Research Institute (LEI).

Between 2000 and 2009, employment in the agricultural sector in the EU27 decreased by 25%, the equivalent of 3.7 million full-time jobs1. It fell by 17% in the EU152 and by 31% in the 12 Member States (NMS122) that joined the EU in 2004 and 2007. In 2009, employment in the agricultural sector was equivalent to 11.2 million full-time jobs in the EU27, of which 5.4 million were in the EU15 and 5.8 million in the NMS12. Between 2000 and 2009, real agricultural income3 per worker increased by 5% on average in the EU27, although the change differed significantly between the NMS12 (+61%) and the EU15 (-10%).

European Union - Cyprus receives final warning to comply with veterinary medicinal products Directive

The Commission has taken further steps against Cyprus for being late with the implementation of the medicinal products for veterinary use Directive (2009/9/EC). A reasoned opinion has been sent to the government of Cyprus over their failure to notify national implementing measures as required by this Directive. Cyprus has been given two months to remedy the situation by adopting and notifying the necessary national measures.

The Swine Restocking Program under the Livestock industry of the Department of Agriculture (DA) distributed boars and gilts in the region. A total of 55 swine were dispersed from the province of Zamboanga del Sur , Zamboanga del Norte, Zambaonga Sibugay and Zamboanga City.
