European Union - Commission outlines blueprint for forward-looking Common Agricultural Policy after 2013

The European Commission has published a Communication on "the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) towards 2020 – Meeting the food, natural resources and territorial challenges of the future". The reform aims at making the European agriculture sector more dynamic, competitive, and effective in responding to the Europe 2020 vision of stimulating sustainable growth, smart growth and inclusive growth. The paper outlines three options for further reform. Following discussion of these ideas, the Commission will present formal legislative proposals in mid-2011.

An abandonment of piglet castration is approaching. Specialists believe that rearing the entire population of young boars is the best way to permanently abandon the practice of castrating male piglets without anaesthesia right across the board. That is the main conclusion reached by the expert workshop "Abandonment of piglet castration – status and perspectives" held by the Fed-eral Ministry for Nutrition, Agriculture and Consumer Protection together with QS Qualität und Sicherheit GmbH on 11 November, 2010 in Berlin.

According to the report released by China Feed Industry Association in the Sixth Major Corporation Exchanging Meet, China's feed output in the year of 2009 has arrived up to 148 million tons from 2000's 74.29 million tons. Gross product was promoted from 158 billion yuan to 426.6 billion yuan.

Vietnamese demand for pork has risen due to higher incomes, an increasing population and growing urbanization. Vietnam’s increased pork supply occurred because of an increase in its stock of pigs and greater pork yields, the relative importance of which has varied.

European Union - Commission publishes report on the application of the Farm Advisory System

Member States have the obligation to establish a system for advising farmers on land and farm management, the so-called Farm Advisory System (FAS). It is a major component of the 2003 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform and had to be introduced by 2007. The objective of the FAS is to help farmers to become more aware of on-farm processes relating to the environment, food safety and animal health and welfare.

Germany - Significant rise in pig meat production in the 3rd quarter of 2010

In the 3rd quarter of 2010, just under 2 million tonnes of meat were produced from commercial slaughtering in Germany, 4.2% more than in the same quarter a year earlier. As further reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this rise was mainly due to the significant increase in the number of pigs slaughtered. The production of poultry meat is also on the rise, while the production of beef is declining.

Strategies for the disposal of fallen livestock and their applicability to the UK situation

Since the introduction of EU Animal By-product Regulation (ABPR) 1774/2002, the open burning and burial of fallen livestock on-farm has been prohibited. A new research project has examined the current methods of livestock disposal available to farmers within the UK, EU and globally. Upon consultation of farmers around the UK, a novel method of on-farm storage and bioreduction was desired to try to reduce the cost of disposal and increase compliance to EU legislation.

United Kingdom - British pig production still lags behind

The latest figures from the BPEX publication on international cost of production show Britain produced 1643kg pig meat per sow in 2009 – the lowest of all the EU countries.

European Union - New research results on EU consumers' perceptions of food-related risks

The majority of Europeans associate food and eating with enjoyment. According to a new Eurobarometer survey, those who are concerned about possible food-related risks tend to worry more about chemical contamination of food rather than bacterial contamination or health and nutrition issues. The poll also showed most Europeans have confidence in national and European food safety agencies as information sources on possible risks associated with food.
