USA - GIPSA increases swine contract scrutiny

The Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration, or GIPSA, is taking a closer look at swine production contracts to ensure their compliance with the Farm Bill requirements. The 2008 Farm Bill established new requirements for swine contracts under the Packers and Stockyards Act. These requirements went into effect on June 18, 2008, upon passage of the Farm Bill.

Austria - Unchanged swine stock but more sheep and goats

As reported by Statistics Austria the swine stock remains nearly unchanged (-0.5% to 3 137 000 pigs compared to June 2009) while the number of sheep and goats (sheep: +3.5% to 345 000 animals, goats: +9.1% to 68 200 animals compared to December 2008) shows significant growth.

Poland- Slow growth of swine population

In 2008 the Polish swine population reached its lowest levels in 40 years. The latest census carried out last year shows that although the population has grown, the total increase has only been by 0.1% compared to the previous year. However, the number of breeding sows has increased by 6%.

Swine influenza virus reassorted with Pandemic H1N1 virus isolated from pig

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) had found in its regular influenza virus surveillance programme that one sample taken from a pig at the Sheung Shui Slaughterhouse on January 7 contained a virus which was essentially a swine influenza virus but had picked up a pandemic H1N1 gene by genetic reassortment. There is no cause for alarm for public health and pork remains safe for consumption. Government is closely monitoring developments and shall continue to keep the public informed.

USA - USDA livestock projections to 2019

The livestock sector continues to make adjustments in the first several years of the projections in response to high grain and soybean meal prices in 2007 and 2008, followed by weak meat demand caused by the global economic recession. With producer returns squeezed, production incentives fell, leading to declines in total U.S. meat and poultry production through 2011.
