United Kingdom - Conservatives launch meat labelling campaign

The Conservative Party has launched a new campaign for clearer meat labelling, which, it says, will empower consumers and give them confidence to buy British. The Conservative’s ‘Honest Food’ campaign is aimed at getting a compulsory ‘country-of-origin’ labelling scheme enshrined in law, so that meat products labelled as British can only come from animals born and reared in this country.

Russia - Russian minister projects poultry, pork self-sufficiency

First Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov told a news conference Russia would be able to fill its poultry meat needs "within the next two to three years" and that "we also have a chance to fully provide ourselves with pork within three to four years." He said Russia produced 8 percent more pork and 18 percent more poultry in 2008 than in 2007.

USA - Surveillance program could protect human and swine health

Collaboration between the Department of Agriculture and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention led to the two-year pilot program that began in September 2008, and it may result in a permanent USDA-funded swine influenza surveillance program, according to the USDA. The program would include sharing of information on human and swine infections.

Philippines - Codex Plant Guideline

The Philippine Department of Agriculture recently approved Administrative Order No. 1 which adopts Annex 3 to the Codex Plant Guideline for the conduct of food safety assessment in situations of low-level presence of recombinant-DNA plant materials in food and feed.
