Russia / Nicaragua - Rosselkhoznadzor’s officials to inspect meat processing plants of Nicaragua

During the meeting with the Head of Federal Agency for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor), Sergey Dankvert, Ariel Bucardo Rocha, the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of Nicaragua expressed the interest in development of trade relations between Russia and Nicaragua, in particular, in organization of supply of Nicaraguan agricultural products to Russia. Russian party proposed to start inspections at the end of January – February 2009.

Ukraine - Animal product prices to grow by 17%

Average prices for agricultural products of all agricultural enterprises grew by 17% in January-November 2008 against the corresponding period of 2007. Animal product prices were up by 50% as well. In particular, prices for cattle, pigs and poultry were up by 65.3%, 72.5%, and 52% respectively.

EU - Co-funded disposal scheme for Irish pigmeat affected by dioxin scare

In view of the particularly difficult market situation in Ireland, the Commission has now proposed a further exceptional market support measure in the form of a disposal scheme for animals blocked on farms that have used contaminated feed as well as for certain pigmeat stocks held in slaughterhouses or still owned by the slaughterhouses. The EU will co-finance the purchases at an average rate of 50 percent.

EU27 real agricultural income per worker1 has decreased by 4.3% in 2008, after increasing by 12.2% in 2007, according to first estimates2 issued by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. The significant increase in the value of animal production in 2008 was the result of nearly stable output volumes (+0.2%) and a clear increase in producer prices (+6.1%). The increase in the value of pig production (+8.5%) was driven by a rise in prices (+9.3%), while volume fell slightly (-0.7%).

Vilsack named to lead U.S.D.A.

President-elect Barack Obama held a press conference today to nominate former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack as Secretary of Agriculture. Mr. Vilsack headed governor groups focusing on biotechnology, ethanol and Midwestern issues, and he eventually led the Democratic Governors Association. He also headed the Democratic Leadership Council, a group characterized as "moderate leaning" that was prominent under former President Bill Clinton. Since ending his presidential bid, Mr. Vilsack has held a number of positions, including one at Iowa State University’s Biosafety Institute. There he had a role in analyzing the risks and benefits of agricultural (plant and animal) biotechnology.

EU - Commission Regulation 1249/2008 on the implementation of the Community scales for the classification of beef, pig and sheep carcases

This Regulation lays down detailed rules for the implementation of the Community scales for the classification of beef, pig and sheep carcases and the reporting of market prices thereof. Member States may now decide not to make application of the Community classification scale of pig carcases referred to in Article 42(1) of Regulation (EC) No 1234/2007 obligatory in all slaughterhouses.

USA - USDA promotes 840 animal ID tags

A microscopic biological sensor that detects Salmonella bacteria in lab tests has been developed by an Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientist and university colleagues. The sensor could be adapted to detect other foodborne pathogens as well.
