Although pigs can’t fly, healthy pigs and healthy people are, effectively, a ‘pigeon pair’ when it comes to Australia’s Pork Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) and its focus as a sponsor of the upcoming 2010 Pan Pacific Pork Expo (PPPE) on Queensland’s Gold Coast from June 16 to 17.

According to FAPRI 2010 U.S. and World Agricultural Outlook, recovering from a 12 per cent drop in 2009, pork trade grows by 2.8 per cent (122,000 metric tons; mt) annually in the next decade, reaching 5.52 mmt in 2019. Pork production increases in the next decade at a rate of 1.9 per cent (1.85 mmt), reaching 115.46 mmt in 2019.

Ireland - Tough times for Irish meat exports

Irish exporters struggled to compete with supplies from the UK market, where the average price in euro terms fell by 7% due to sterling weakening. Volume shipments to the UK declined by 5% as a result, but the UK market share of total Irish exports remained unchanged at 51%.

Pork production saw rapid growth in the second half of the last decade expanding 22.0% from 2004 to 2009. As production has risen, there has been rapid changes in the structure of the sector.

Russia - Temporary restrictions imposed on import of animal products from Colombia lifted

The Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance lifts from 7 April 2010 previously imposed temporary restrictions (Rosselkhoznadzor Instruction FS-NV-2/8807 dd. 14.08.2009) on import from Colombia (excluding the Nariño Department) to Russia of animals susceptible to FMD, beef, mutton, pork, milk and dairy products including finished products and feeds of animal origin, other raw materials and products derived from animals susceptible to FMD, used equipment for their management, slaughter and processing.
